Ivory Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria subfusca
The ivory ornamental tarantula is a tree-dwelling spider from Sri Lanka, with ivory markings on a dark brown body. Its mostly dark knee undersides and yellow patches beneath the palps distinguish it from P. smithi. Highland and lowland are hobby labels within this species. Experienced hobbyists provide a solitary, secure enclosure with upright bark, a retreat, ventilation and water.
Avoid handling; Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and muscle cramps. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. It is US-listed endangered and international trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
