Japanese Squirrel
Sciurus lis
The Japanese squirrel is a tree squirrel native to Japan, with brown to gray upperparts, a white belly and a full bushy tail. The portrait shows the grayer winter coat with a white belly; warmer orange patches can occur on the sides. It eats seeds, nuts, fruit and buds and stores food for later use. Zoo keepers provide branches and nest boxes; females bear live young. It is a separate species from the Eurasian red squirrel, although coat colors and winter ear tufts overlap, so origin matters for identification.
