Karoo Round-Eared Sengi
Macroscelides proboscideus
The Karoo round-eared sengi is a small southern African mammal with a flexible pointed snout, rounded ears, long hindlegs and a slender tail. It searches dry ground for insects and other invertebrates and bears live young. Specialist mammal collections provide covered ground space with retreats. It is an elephant relative rather than a true shrew. The current species is narrower than older accounts of Macroscelides proboscideus, which also included subsequently separated species.
