Klappenbach's Red-Bellied Frog
Melanophryniscus klappenbachi
This small toad from Paraguay and northeastern Argentina is bred by specialist hobbyists. A black body with yellow markings gives it the hobby name bumblebee toad; red markings underneath can be reduced in captive-bred animals. Keepers provide ventilated enclosures with leaf litter, hides, shallow water and tiny supplemented insects. Rainy conditions trigger egg laying in water. It swims poorly, so water areas need easy exits. Older trade labels sometimes confused it with the distinct redbelly toad.
