Shusui
Shusui is a Doitsu version of Asagi koi, combining blue or blue-gray skin with red or orange color along the sides and a row of large mirror scales down the back. Because the fish lacks a full field of small scales, the dorsal scale row becomes a major feature and should look tidy. Judges usually weigh the balance of blue ground, red side color, clean head, straight scale placement, and body shape.
Keepers choosing Shusui should inspect the back carefully, since crooked, uneven, or missing mirror scales are easy to see from above. Red that climbs too high can overwhelm the blue, while weak side color may leave the fish looking unfinished. Shusui need standard koi water quality, oxygen, space, and quarantine, with gentle handling to protect smooth skin. Breeding can be challenging because Doitsu scale layout, Asagi-type color, and body quality all need to line up in the same fish.
