Utsuri
Utsuri is the common shortened name for black-based koi patterned with one contrasting color. The main forms are Shiro Utsuri with white, Hi Utsuri with red, and Ki Utsuri with yellow. Unlike Bekko, which reads as black markings on a lighter ground, Utsuri pattern should feel as if color is wrapping over a black body. Strong sumi, clear contrast, and a balanced head pattern are central to the variety's look.
Selecting Utsuri involves judging how the black and the contrasting color will mature together. Shiro Utsuri can gain or lose visual balance as sumi rises, while Hi and Ki Utsuri may be judged for color richness as well as pattern. Owners should look for a sound body, clean skin, and markings that remain interesting from above as the fish swims. Good pond care cannot create pattern, but stable water, space, and low stress help the skin and sumi show at their best.
