Kurdistan Newt
Neurergus derjugini
The Kurdistan newt is a stream-breeding salamander from the Zagros Mountains of Iran and Iraq. Its black back has irregular yellow spots, and the red-orange underside can carry black throat markings. Conservation breeders have raised eggs, larvae and adults at Razi University. Adults breed in highland streams and feed on aquatic invertebrates; clean water and rock refuges matter. Its smaller head and spotted throat help separate it from the Lake Urmia newt. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
