Oregon-R

Oregon-R is a classic wild-type laboratory strain of Drosophila melanogaster used in research and teaching. Like other wild-type stocks, it generally has red eyes, normal wings, and the standard body shape of the species, but it carries its own laboratory history and genetic background. The strain is often used as a comparison line, a crossing partner, or a familiar stock for maintaining baseline cultures. Sublines can differ after long separation, so source still matters.

Labs keep Oregon-R on standard fly medium in vials or bottles, transferring adults on a schedule that prevents overcrowding and culture collapse. Temperature, humidity, food quality, and contamination all affect vigor and development timing. Researchers should avoid treating any wild-type strain as interchangeable without checking the needs of the experiment. For stock rooms and classrooms, clear labels, separate work areas, and routine checks for unexpected eye color or wing traits help protect the line from accidental mixing.
