Unknown Strain

Unknown Strain

Unknown strain identifies a Drosophila melanogaster culture whose strain name, genotype, or source history is missing. The flies may be healthy and ordinary in appearance, but without records they cannot be assumed to be Canton-S, Oregon-R, w1118, or any other named stock. This label is especially useful for inherited classroom cultures, old vials with damaged labels, or colonies recovered from mixed storage.

Managers should treat unknown-strain flies as separate from defined stocks until their identity is clarified or the culture is retired. They can be used for basic observation, life-cycle teaching, or practice handling, but not as a rigorous control line. Good care includes fresh medium, regular generation turnover, and checks for contamination or unexpected visible traits. If the culture will be kept, documenting eye color, wing shape, source notes, and any crosses used for identification is better than guessing at a name.

Colors: White Eye, Wild Type
