Mixed Variety
A mixed variety laboratory medaka is an Oryzias latipes group whose animals are not being kept as one cleanly named strain, color form, or research line. The fish may include orange-red and wild type appearances, or offspring from more than one medaka variety. Mixed groups can still be healthy, useful animals, but the label signals that visible traits and genetic background may not be consistent from one individual to the next.
For owners, educators, and labs, mixed variety medaka are often suitable for general observation, basic breeding practice, or display where strict strain identity is not the point. They should not be substituted for a defined line in work that depends on repeatable genetic background. Clear notes about parentage, source, color range, and whether the group has been bred together for several generations make future care and sharing much easier.
