Lake Urmia Newt
Neurergus crocatus
The Lake Urmia newt inhabits mountain streams around the Iran, Iraq and Turkey border region. A broad triangular head and pale spots mark its black body; the Aqrah form shown here has large whitish spots and an orange underside. Females attach eggs beneath submerged rocks. Specialist keepers provide clean, cool water, rock shelters and a land refuge. Its robust build and unspotted orange throat help separate it from the Kurdistan newt. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
