Lamprima adolphinae
Lamprima adolphinae
Lamprima adolphinae is a metallic stag beetle from New Guinea and nearby Indonesian islands. Males carry upward-curving jaws and can show brilliant green and gold reflections; females have much smaller jaws. Captive females tunnel into soft, white-rotted hardwood to lay eggs.
The larvae feed on decomposing wood or suitable fermented hardwood substrate, rather than ordinary potting soil. Adults need climbing surfaces and accept beetle jelly or soft fruit. Its relatively small body and colorful finish distinguish it from the large black stag beetles.
