Large Clawed Scorpion
Scorpio maurus
The large clawed scorpion has a compact body, powerful pincers and a much slimmer tail. Under current taxonomy, Scorpio maurus is restricted to northern Algeria and Tunisia; many former subspecies elsewhere are now separate species. Golden scorpions sold under the old broad name are not automatically S. maurus. Specialist keepers should seek a documented identity and origin. Provide a secure enclosure with a retreat, deep diggable substrate and water, and avoid handling. Females give birth to live young.
