Lyle's Flying Fox
Pteropus lylei
Lyle's flying fox has broad dark wings and an ochre to orange-brown mantle. The portrait shows a Vietnamese form with ochre crown and forehead, a dark muzzle and dark eye surrounds. It feeds on fruit, flowers and nectar in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, often leaving tree roosts around dusk. It is generally smaller than the Indian flying fox, but sizes and coat colors overlap, so origin and measured proportions matter for identification.
Specialist zoos house it in flight spaces with high roosting branches and manage a fruit-bat diet. Females bear live young. CITES Appendix II regulates international trade. Pteropus is also on the US injurious-wildlife list, restricting import and specified transport.
