Madagascar Rain Frog
Scaphiophryne madagascariensis
This burrowing frog comes from Madagascar and is bred by specialist amphibian hobbyists. Its rounded reddish-brown body carries conspicuous green markings. Keepers provide deep moist substrate, cover, ventilation, shallow clean water and suitable insect prey, avoiding excessive heat. Seasonal changes in moisture are important for breeding: females lay eggs in shallow water after rainy conditions return, and the young pass through a tadpole stage. It spends much of its time buried rather than climbing plants.
