Mixed Variety
Mixed variety maingano cichlid refers to a Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos whose strain, locality claim, or parentage is mixed rather than a defined aquarium line. The maingano is a small Lake Malawi mbuna from rocky habitat around Likoma Island, with black and electric-blue horizontal striping and males and females that look more alike than many related Melanochromis. Mixed-variety fish may come from crossed domestic lines or stock blended with similar mbuna in dealer tanks.
Aquarists keep them as territorial rock-dwelling cichlids, not as community fish for soft-water tanks. Hard alkaline water, stable water quality, and a layout with caves and broken sightlines help reduce constant chasing. Their diet should lean toward herbivore-friendly mbuna foods rather than heavy meaty feeding. Fish of mixed background can still be attractive display animals, but they should not be sold or traded as pure maingano breeding stock without clear provenance.
