Unclassified Variety
Unclassified variety maingano cichlid is a record term for a fish identified as Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos but not assigned to a particular strain, collection locality, or selective-breeding line. The species is one of the blue-and-black Lake Malawi mbuna and is sometimes confused in shops with related Melanochromis, especially when juveniles are small. Because both sexes carry dark horizontal striping, the absence of a variety name may not be obvious from appearance alone.
Hobbyists should treat an unclassified specimen as a standard maingano for husbandry: a rocky aquarium, hard alkaline water, and tankmates chosen for mbuna temperament. Males can be forceful, so stocking plans and hiding places matter more than the label. For breeding projects, unclassified fish are best kept out of lines meant to preserve known origin or predictable color inheritance. Clear photos, source notes, and honest labeling help prevent these cichlids from being confused with hybrids or with similar blue mbuna.
