Mandarin Salamander
Tylototriton shanjing
The mandarin salamander is a mostly terrestrial newt from Yunnan, China. Its black-brown body carries orange head ridges, a back ridge, rows of side knobs and orange limbs and tail. Breeding involves eggs laid at wet sites associated with standing water. Specialist keepers provide moist land with cover and a moisture gradient, plus suitable breeding water. It is in CITES Appendix II and subject to US injurious-salamander restrictions. Bright orange markings distinguish it from the duller Shan crocodile newt.
