Maranon Poison Frog
Excidobates mysteriosus
This poison frog comes from a small area of northwestern Peru and is bred by experienced amphibian hobbyists. Its black body has conspicuous pale spots, including larger marks beneath the thighs. Keepers provide humid planted enclosures with climbing cover, leaf litter, tiny supplemented insects and suitable water-filled breeding sites. Females lay eggs, and a parent carries tadpoles to water. It needs cooler, well-ventilated conditions than a hot lowland terrarium; prolonged overheating can prevent breeding.
