Marbled Newt
Triturus marmoratus
The marbled newt has vivid green and black marbling and a dark belly flecked with small pale spots. Females, including the adult shown here, have an orange back line. It occurs in France and the Iberian Peninsula, using ponds for breeding and sheltered land between aquatic periods. Females wrap single eggs in aquatic leaves. Experienced keepers provide cool breeding water and damp, covered land. It is larger than the southern marbled newt, which has a paler belly. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
