Marbled Shovel-Nosed Frog
Hemisus marmoratus
This small African frog digs into soil with its reinforced pointed snout. It has a rounded body, short legs and mottled brown coloring, and is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers and researchers. Enclosures need deep moist soil, shelter, suitable small invertebrates and water for larvae. Females lay eggs in underground chambers and remain with the developing young. Tadpoles eventually reach water, but accounts differ on how they get there, so back-carrying should not be assumed.
