Martinique Pink Toe Tarantula
Caribena versicolor
The Martinique pink toe tarantula is an arboreal tarantula from Martinique, currently known as Caribena versicolor and still familiar to many keepers under its older placement in Avicularia. Spiderlings are bright blue, while mature animals develop a mix of green, blue, red, and pink tones with a tree-dwelling build and silk-lined retreats. The species lives above the ground in vegetation and sheltered crevices, so it behaves differently from heavier terrestrial tarantulas. Its beauty is real, but it is also a delicate, fast-moving spider rather than a display object meant for routine handling.
Captive care focuses on a tall enclosure with anchor points for webbing, strong cross ventilation, moderate humidity, and a dry retreat that never becomes stagnant. Slings need appropriately tiny prey and careful moisture control, while adults benefit from stable perches, secure lids, and minimal disturbance during molts. Keepers should avoid wet, sealed setups that encourage mold and sudden ventilation problems. Breeding requires mature male timing, safe introductions, and protection of egg sacs or spiderlings after emergence. Accurate species labels matter because pink toe tarantulas have a history of trade-name confusion.
