Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula
Brachypelma auratum
The Mexican flame knee tarantula comes from Mexico and has black legs with narrow pale joint rings and red-orange flames on the knees. Unlike Brachypelma smithi, its lower legs remain predominantly black. Tarantula hobbyists keep this terrestrial species singly in low, secure enclosures with diggable substrate, a hide and a water dish. Its defensive hairs can irritate skin and eyes, and handling can lead to damaging falls. Females lay eggs in a silk sac. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
