Mexican Red Knee Tarantula (Brachypelma smithi)
Brachypelma smithi
Brachypelma smithi is the Mexican red knee from Guerrero, distinct from B. hamorii following the 2017 revision. Many older hobby records used smithi for hamorii, so check origin and identification rather than the common name alone. Adults have broad orange knee surfaces and orange on the outer halves of the tibiae; color can overlap with hamorii.
Hobbyists keep it singly in a low enclosure with a hide, diggable substrate and water. Avoid handling and irritating defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in a silk sac. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
