Montseny Brook Newt
Calotriton arnoldi
The Montseny brook newt is restricted to cold streams in Spain's Montseny massif. It has granular brown skin, small yellow tail-side marks, a pale underside and no back crest. Adults and juveniles remain aquatic, and females hide eggs beneath rocks. Conservation centers and Barcelona Zoo breed it using clean, oxygen-rich water and tightly managed conditions. It is distinct from the Pyrenean brook newt and from the crested pond newts. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
