Mountain Chicken
Leptodactylus fallax
Despite its name, the mountain chicken is a giant frog from Dominica and Montserrat. Zoos breed it for conservation rather than the ordinary pet trade. Keepers provide roomy ground-level enclosures with moist, well-drained substrate, deep retreats, clean water and varied invertebrate prey. It lays eggs in a foam nest inside a burrow. The female feeds the developing young with unfertilized eggs, making successful breeding dependent on parental care. Adults are brown with powerful legs.
