Mountain Goat
Oreamnos americanus
The mountain goat, Oreamnos americanus, is a white-coated alpine ungulate of western North America and is not a true domestic goat. It belongs to the goat-antelope group and is built for cliffs, snowfields, and steep talus, with black horns, powerful shoulders, dense insulating hair, and hooves that grip narrow ledges. Wild animals graze and browse on alpine grasses, sedges, shrubs, lichens, and mineral-rich sites.
Human management centers on wildlife agencies, protected areas, and a small number of zoological collections. Field teams monitor population size, kid survival, translocations, mineral-site use, and conflicts created when animals approach roads or hiking areas. Captive care requires cool weather tolerance, rugged climbing surfaces, careful mineral nutrition, and hoof wear that resembles natural terrain. Feeding or crowding wild mountain goats can create dangerous behavior, so visitor management is part of stewardship.
