Unknown Breed

An unknown-breed mountain quail is a mountain quail, Oreortyx pictus, recorded without a named captive strain, locality, or color variety. Mountain quail are western North American game birds of brushy slopes, conifer edges, chaparral, and foothill canyons. They are easy to recognize by the two long straight head plumes, gray-brown body, chestnut throat, and strongly barred sides. Most captive records are wild-type in appearance; formal breeds are not commonly used for this species the way they are for chickens, pigeons, or domestic quail.

People encounter mountain quail in permitted aviculture, conservation breeding, wildlife rehabilitation, and field study rather than ordinary backyard poultry keeping. Quiet, planted aviaries with cover and dry footing suit their shy, ground-dwelling habits, whether birds are held as pairs or small coveys. A high-quality game-bird ration is the base feed, with greens, small seeds, grit, and insects used as supplements. Native game-bird rules and release restrictions vary, so sourcing, permits, and the purpose of keeping a bird need to be clear from the start.
