Natterjack Toad
Epidalea calamita
This European toad has short legs and a narrow yellow stripe down its warty back. It is maintained by amphibian hobbyists and conservation breeding programs. Keepers provide ground-level enclosures with sandy substrate, hides and both moist and drier retreats, feeding small invertebrates. Seasonal conditions and shallow water are important for breeding; females lay strings of eggs that develop into tadpoles. Native populations are protected in parts of its range, so lawful provenance matters.
