Veracruz Red Rump Tarantula
Tliltocatl kahlenbergi
The Veracruz red rump tarantula is a Mexican terrestrial species also called the New Mexican tarantula. Adults have black legs, a slightly iridescent dark carapace and numerous long, straight red hairs on the abdomen. It resembles other red-rumped Tliltocatl, so color alone is not a secure identification.
Hobbyists keep it singly with a hide, diggable substrate, water and little fall height. Avoid handling and its irritating defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in a silk sac. Formerly Brachypelma kahlenbergi, it remains covered by CITES Appendix II.
