North African Fire Salamander
Salamandra algira
The North African fire salamander inhabits moist mountain habitats in Morocco and Algeria. Its black skin carries yellow patches, with red marks in some populations. Females bear live young: most release larvae into water, while some Moroccan populations produce fully formed young.
Specialist breeders provide cool, damp land, shelters and invertebrate foods. CITES Appendix III requires origin-dependent trade documents, and US injurious-salamander restrictions apply. It is distinct from the European fire salamander.
