Northern Alligator Lizard
Elgaria coerulea
This secretive lizard occurs in western North America, including southwestern Canada. Adults have irregular dark bands, relatively dark eyes, short legs and a long tail. It is kept in specialist collections and educational programs, where planted enclosures provide cover, suitable substrate, water and controlled heating.
It eats invertebrates and gives birth to fully formed young. California requires a fishing license for sport take and limits daily take and possession to two; parks and designated ecological reserves are closed to take.
