Northern Fur Seal
Callorhinus ursinus
The northern fur seal is a North Pacific eared seal with dense underfur, visible external ears and long flippers. Adult males are much heavier than females and develop thick necks and shoulder manes. It feeds mainly on fish and squid and bears live pups ashore. Aquariums and marine-mammal collections provide pools and haul-out space. The Marine Mammal Protection Act applies; US wild capture or import for public display requires the applicable federal permit. It is distinct from the Arctocephalus fur seals.
