Northern Treeshrew
Tupaia belangeri
The northern treeshrew is a small Southeast Asian mammal with gray-olive fur, a pointed muzzle and a long, fully furred tail. Despite its squirrel-like outline, it belongs to the treeshrew order rather than the rodents or true shrews. It eats insects and fruit and gives birth to live young. Zoo and research collections provide climbing cover and sheltered resting sites. Fresh drinking water is important; its energetic foraging and small size call for carefully managed housing.
