Nyasa Lovebird

Agapornis lilianae

The Nyasa lovebird, Agapornis lilianae, is a small African parrot also called Lilian's lovebird. It is associated with parts of Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and nearby riverine or mopane woodland habitats, often near water. The bird is mostly green with a warm orange-red face, pale eye ring, and compact build, resembling other eye-ring lovebirds closely enough that careful identification matters in aviculture and conservation records.

In captivity, Nyasa lovebirds need more than a small cage and a seed cup. They do best with social housing, flight space, bathing opportunities, chewable materials, and a varied diet that includes formulated food and fresh plant items. Breeders should avoid accidental hybridization with Fischer's, masked, or other related lovebirds, since mixed birds can confuse records and conservation value. Legal sourcing, closed leg bands or other documentation, and quarantine are practical concerns for anyone acquiring breeding stock.
