Painted Frog
Discoglossus pictus
The painted frog is native to parts of North Africa and central Mediterranean islands and is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers. Adults can be spotted or striped, with brown upperparts, a pointed snout and relatively smooth skin. Suitable enclosures combine sheltered moist land, clean shallow water and varied small invertebrate prey. Females lay eggs in water, where the tadpoles develop. Similar-looking Moroccan painted frogs belong to Discoglossus scovazzi, so color alone cannot establish the species.
