Kalahari Thick Tail Scorpion
Parabuthus raudus
The Kalahari thick tail scorpion is a large, pale yellow to orange species of southern African sandy country, including Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. Its back and rear tail segments can be darker. It burrows in loose sand, often near shrubs or grass. Specialist keepers need an escape-proof enclosure with deep sand-based substrate, shelter and water. Its painful sting warrants medical assessment, so handling is inappropriate. Similar yellow thick tails require careful identification. Females bear live young.
