Red Island Birdeater
Phormictopus atrichomatus
The red island birdeater is a terrestrial tarantula traded as Phormictopus atrichomatus. Adults have a dark chocolate-to-black base with warm red, copper or mahogany hairs on the legs and abdomen. The World Spider Catalog gives its origin as probably Hispaniola, so a seller's island label should not be treated as confirmed locality.
Experienced keepers provide a secure, ventilated ground-level enclosure with substantial substrate, a sheltered retreat and drinking water. Offer appropriately sized insects rather than birds, retain breeder records and avoid handling. Females lay eggs in a silk sac.
