Ba Xuyen
The Ba Xuyen pig is a Vietnamese domestic pig breed from the Mekong Delta, especially the former Ba Xuyen area around today's Soc Trang region. It developed as a local composite, commonly described as combining indigenous pigs with imported Berkshire influence, and often shows black-and-white spotted or pied coloring. Ba Xuyen pigs are medium sized, adapted to hot humid lowland conditions, and traditionally suited to smallholder production where rice bran, crop residues, and household byproducts formed part of the feeding system.
Farmers have used Ba Xuyen pigs for pork production and crossbreeding, valuing their adaptation and sow performance even when faster-growing exotic breeds are available. Modern management still benefits from the breed's tolerance of local conditions, but balanced protein, minerals, clean water, and parasite control make a large difference in growth and litter results. Conservation herds and village breeding programs need to avoid replacing the breed entirely with imported genetics. For buyers, a clearly sourced pig with recognizable pied type and local adaptation is more meaningful than color alone.
