Beijing Black
The Beijing Black is a Chinese domestic pig breed developed around Beijing from local black pigs and introduced breeds selected for size, growth, and carcass performance. It is typically black coated, medium to large framed, and more uniform than many village landraces. The breed is often described as combining useful Chinese traits, such as good fertility and adaptability, with improved meat production from commercial ancestry, though individual lines can differ by breeding station or farm.
In China, Beijing Black pigs have been used for pure breeding, crossbreeding, and research on pork quality and reproduction. They generally fit semi-intensive or intensive housing better than feral-style management, but they still need cool ventilation in hot weather and dry footing during cold northern winters. Feeding should support lean growth without ignoring the sow line's reproductive demands. Producers looking at Beijing Black genetics should ask whether stock comes from a maintained breeding herd, a local cross, or a conservation population, because those backgrounds affect uniformity and performance.
