Chester White
The Chester White is an American white pig breed developed in Chester County, Pennsylvania, during the nineteenth century from local and imported white hogs. It is a large-framed meat breed with a white coat and skin, medium to large drooping ears, and a long deep body. In United States show and seedstock circles, Chester Whites are classed among maternal breeds for litter size, milk production, longevity, and soundness while still producing useful market hogs. It is separate from Yorkshire or Landrace despite the pale color.
On farms, Chester Whites are used as purebred breeding stock and in crossbreeding systems where maternal traits complement terminal sire lines. Their white skin makes shade important on pasture because sunburn can be a real issue in open lots or hot climates. Selection should put feet, legs, underline quality, and temperament ahead of size alone, especially for replacement gilts. Buyers interested in registered animals should confirm papers and breed marks through the relevant swine registry, while pork producers may care more about health status, reproductive history, and line performance.
