Chiangmai Blackpig A.k.a. Moodum Chiangmai
Chiangmai Blackpig, often written Moodum Chiangmai or Moo Dum Chiang Mai, is a local Thai black pig type associated with Chiang Mai and the upland north of Thailand. The name is descriptive in Thai, meaning Chiang Mai black pig, and it is better understood as a regional native strain than as a widely standardized international breed. Animals are typically small to medium, dark skinned or black coated, hardy on rougher village feeds and slower growing than modern white commercial pigs. They are valued for adaptation, local pork flavor and as a genetic resource in Thai livestock conservation.
Management usually fits smallholder, free-range or semi-confined systems with secure night housing, shade, clean water and protection from heavy parasite pressure in humid conditions. These pigs may forage well, but breeding sows and growing pigs still need balanced protein and minerals if good survival and growth are expected. Because names and transliterations vary, buyers should ask about the herd's source, whether animals are pure native stock or crossed with Duroc, Large White or other commercial breeds, and how breeding pairs are selected to avoid close inbreeding.
