Chinese Mini
Chinese mini pig is an umbrella term for small domestic pig strains developed or maintained in China, rather than a single breed with one fixed appearance. Well-known examples include Bama miniature pigs, Wuzhishan pigs, Guizhou miniature pigs and Tibetan-derived research lines. They were selected from native pigs for compact adult size, early maturity and manageable temperament, making them useful in biomedical research and, in some cases, as companion pigs. Colors range from black to black-and-white or brown depending on the strain, and adult size can still be far larger than the marketing language around mini pigs suggests.
People considering a Chinese mini pig need to plan for a real pig, not a cage pet. Zoning rules, secure outdoor access, rooting enrichment, hoof and tusk care, and a diet that prevents obesity all matter. Research colonies manage these pigs through closed breeding, health screening and detailed records so that body size and experimental traits stay consistent. Private buyers should ask for the strain name, mature size of the parents and veterinary history, and should be wary of claims that any pig will remain permanently tiny on restricted feed.
