Dermantsi Pied
Dermantsi Pied is a little-documented Bulgarian pig type named for Dermantsi, a village in northern Bulgaria. It is usually described as a local pied or spotted pig rather than an internationally standardized commercial breed, with black-and-white patterning and a medium, practical farm build. Like several Balkan local pigs, it appears to have been shaped by village selection and some crossing with improved breeds, so historical descriptions may not all match.
Where Dermantsi Pied animals or descendants are maintained, the context is usually small-farm production, regional heritage, or genetic-resource conservation. Color alone is not enough to identify the type; provenance and continuity of breeding matter. Management would be similar to other hardy domestic pigs, using secure pens or pasture fencing, shelter from wet weather, and feed that balances foraging with grain or household byproducts. In a tiny population, planned matings are needed to avoid narrowing the gene pool.
