Dharane Kalo Sungur
Dharane Kalo Sungur is a Nepalese black pig type associated with Dharan and the surrounding eastern hills and plains. The name is descriptive - kalo means black and sungur means pig - and it is generally treated as a local breed or landrace rather than a standardized international pig. Animals are typically black, compact to medium in size, and valued by smallholders for hardiness, scavenging ability, and acceptance in local pork markets.
These pigs are most often managed in backyard or semi-intensive systems where crop byproducts, kitchen scraps, and seasonal forage may be paired with concentrates when faster growth is needed. They need a dry pen and secure containment; shade and a wallow or other cooling help in humid subtropical weather. Because formal herd records may be limited, keeping unrelated breeding animals and noting parentage is especially useful. Veterinary support, vaccination where available, and parasite control are important when pigs are raised close to homes and other livestock.
