East Balkan
The East Balkan pig is a native Bulgarian domestic pig from the eastern Balkan and Black Sea forest regions. It is usually black or dark bristled, medium sized, long-snouted, and strong-legged, with a more primitive outline than modern white commercial pigs. The breed was shaped in extensive systems where pigs ranged through oak and beech woods, eating acorns, roots, grasses, and seasonal crop leftovers. That background gives it a reputation for hardiness and grazing ability, but it also grows more slowly than intensive meat breeds.
Management is closer to forest-pasture herding than barn-based finishing. Herds need legal grazing access, identification, seasonal supplementation, and protection of farrowing sows without losing the outdoor adaptation that defines the breed. Because East Balkan pigs may share landscapes with wild boar, disease surveillance and biosecurity are central to conservation planning, especially in areas affected by African swine fever. Small populations are maintained as genetic resources, so breeding choices should preserve unrelated family lines rather than selecting only for quick weight gain.
