Estonian Bacon
The Estonian Bacon pig is a white bacon-type breed developed in Estonia for lean pork production. It came from local pig populations improved with Landrace and other European meat-breed influence, producing a long-bodied animal with drooping ears, good length through the side, and a carcass suited to bacon and fresh pork. It belongs to the practical northern European group of production pigs rather than the ornamental or color-based heritage breeds.
Farm use centers on efficient growth, sow productivity, and predictable carcass quality. Estonian Bacon pigs may be kept in commercial units or controlled small-farm systems, but they need the same careful feeding, ventilation, bedding, and farrowing management as other large white pigs. In colder climates, housing must prevent drafts while still removing moisture and ammonia. Outside Estonia and nearby breeding networks, buyers should verify whether animals are true Estonian Bacon stock or general Landrace-type crosses.
