Finnish Landrace
The Finnish Landrace is Finland's white, lop-eared Landrace-type pig, developed from local pigs and related northern European breeding stock. It has the long body, light skin, and maternal emphasis typical of Landrace breeds, with selection aimed at litter size, milk production, soundness, and a lean market carcass. In Finnish pork production it has often been used alongside Yorkshire or Large White lines to produce productive crossbred sows.
These pigs are managed primarily as farm livestock, not as low-maintenance pasture pets. Large litters require attentive farrowing facilities, steady nutrition, and careful monitoring of piglet warmth and colostrum intake. In northern conditions, housing needs insulation, dry bedding, and good air quality; outdoors, white skin still needs shade during strong sun. Breeders usually pay close attention to teat number, legs, growth rate, and reproductive records, because the breed's value is strongest as a reliable maternal line.
