French Landrace
The French Landrace, or Landrace français, is a French white pig breed developed from Landrace-type stock and selected for modern pork production. It is large, long-bodied, and typically lop-eared, with breeding emphasis on prolific sows, good mothering ability, growth, and lean carcass traits. In France it has been used heavily in dam-line breeding, often paired with Large White or terminal sires to produce market pigs.
Management is usually commercial or semi-commercial, with selection based on performance rather than appearance alone. French Landrace sows need housing and farrowing systems designed for large, productive animals, plus diets that support milk production without harming feet and legs. White pigs kept outdoors require shade, wallows, and protection from extreme weather. Buyers should distinguish registered or performance-recorded French Landrace breeding stock from ordinary white Landrace-type crosses, especially if the goal is a planned breeding program.
