German Landrace
The German Landrace, known in German as Deutsche Landrasse, is one of Germany's major white production pig breeds. It was developed from local and imported Landrace-type pigs and selected for a long body, lop ears, fertility, growth, and lean carcass quality. The breed is most important as a maternal line in structured pig-breeding systems, commonly contributing prolific sows for crossbred pork production.
On farms, German Landrace pigs are managed through performance testing, planned matings, and careful herd health programs. They are large, productive animals that need balanced rations, clean water, good ventilation, and flooring that protects legs and feet. Farrowing management matters because sow productivity is a central trait. Outdoor systems can work when shade, shelter, and secure fencing are provided, but these pigs are not usually chosen for low-input heritage grazing. Breeding buyers should confirm whether stock is German Landrace or a generic Landrace-type white pig.
